Gate types

There are several gate types:

  • Registration Gate — prompts reader to input email address to bypass gate
  • Paid Gate — prompts reader to pay (donation, membership, subscription) to bypass gate
  • Dual Gate — prompts reader to provide email and/or payment based on reader status

Add a new gate

To create a new gate:

  • Navigate to Audience -> Access Control. When there are no active gates, you see a startup menu.
  • Choose what content you want to restrict — all posts or specific posts. This can be changed at any time.
  • A blank gate will appear. You can input the name at any time.
  • If you select “Restrict all posts,” then this gate will apply to all posts on your site when activated.
  • If you select “Choose specific content” more options appear
  • You can apply the gate to posts based on category (e.g., “Sports”), tag (e.g., “Exclusive”) or a specific post.
  • Within these options, you can also exclude specific content.
  • Then you choose the requirement: Will you have readers register an email address to bypass the gate, or pay — or both.
  • Registered access contains two options.
    • Metering: allow limited views before requiring registration
    • Verification: require readers to verify account via a code sent to their email address
  • Paid access contains five options.
    • Metering: allow limited views before requiring registration
    • Active subscription: select products required to access gate (these can be donations or paid memberships)
    • Whitelisted email domain
    • Reader data
    • Institutional access: requires access based on pre-built institutions found in “Institutions” settings from the main menu

Gate layout

After you choose your gate requirements, default layouts are created based on restriction type. Select “edit layout” to edit the style and function. All layouts have options on the right-hand side, and standard block editing.

Registration gate will generate a Registration block group.

Paid gate will generate a Subscription block group.

A gate with both access types enabled generates two layouts that can be edited separately: A gate to pay for membership (above), and a dual gate prompting registration and paid membership (below).
