Access Control main menu options
In Audience -> Access Control, after you’ve made a gate, you’ll see several features:
- Status: Active, Inactive
- Content Rules
- A three-dot button to allow edit of current gates, including gate layout

Also in the main menu, you’ll find:
- Gate priority
- Institutions
- Advanced Settings

Gate Priority
Gate priority determines which gate a reader will see if they land on a post that is subject to more than one gate.

Institutions
Institutions allow you to crate entities with access to your content based on email domain, IP range, and unique reader data. After creating an institution, that title can be found in gate access settings.

Advanced settings
Advanced settings contains two switches:
- Restrict content in feeds – Restricts content when consumed through an RSS feed.
- Bypass restrictions for newsletter links – Allows readers who arrive at the site from a newsletter sent via the Newspack Newsletters plugin to temporarily bypass all content restrictions for up to one hour. Be aware that newsletters can be forwarded, and anyone who has a valid link from a sent newsletter can bypass content restrictions if this is enabled.
- Note: If you’re using WooCommerce Memberships for content gating, this option is also available in the Audience > Configuration > Content Gating page.

Metered Countdown
At the bottom of the Access Control main menu you’ll find Metered countdown. Select “Enable” to set up a banner to inform readers of the free post countdown.

Once enabled, select Configure to choose several design options, language, and the subscribe prompt. This can be a product you encourage readers to purchase — enabled directly in the banner. Or this can be a landing page where readers can register a site account.

Content gifting
At the bottom of the Access Control main menu you’ll find Content gifting. Select “Enable” to unlock settings that allow subscribers to share gated content with non-subscribers. This allows recipients to read the full content without a subscription.

Once enabled, select “Configure” to set gifting options.

Further down you can also edit the banner that will display at the bottom of the recipient screen.
