If you’re using WooCommerce on your site, Newspack allows you to customize the email receipts sent to your donors and customers. These receipts use the block editor (similar to Newspack Newsletters) and include placeholders that you can use to add the customer’s name, payment amount, date, and more.
How to customize email receipts
Newspack comes with a default email receipt that includes a thank you message, and a summary of the customer’s purchase information.
To edit the receipt:
- Navigate to Newspack > Settings and click the ‘Emails’ tab.
- Click the ‘Edit’ link in the Receipt panel. This will bring you to a block editor with the receipt’s content.

- Make any edits to the email receipt using the block editor. You can use the dynamic placeholders listed in the Instructions panel in the right sidebar (these are also listed in the section below).
- You can change the email’s subject line by changing the ‘Subject’ field in the Settings panel in the right sidebar. By default, the subject is “Thank you!”.

- Once you’re done making changes, you can send yourself a test email from the Testing panel in the right sidebar. This can help you make sure that your custom receipt is displaying as expected.

Placeholders for dynamic content
You can use the following placeholders to insert dynamic content into your email receipts:
*BILLING_NAME*will display the customer’s billing name.*AMOUNT*will display the payment amount.*DATE*will display the payment date.*PAYMENT_METHOD*will display the last four digits of the credit card used for payment.*CONTACT_EMAIL*will display the contact email to your site (same as the “From” email address).*RECEIPT_URL*will display an automatically-generated link to the receipt in the customer’s account on your website.
Using WooCommerce’s default receipts
You may prefer to use WooCommerce’s default email receipts over the customizeable version. To do that:
- Navigate to Newspack > Settings and click the Emails tab.
- Toggle off the control in the Receipt panel to turn off the Newspack’s customizable receipts.
- A message will appear at the bottom of the panel, confirming that you want to use WooCommerce’s receipts as the default.
